Instrument-Assisted Soft-Tissue Mobilization Explained - Sept ACAnews Mag

In this September's issue of ACAnews, Caitlin Lukacs discusses the rise of Instrument-Assisted Soft-Tissue Mobilization. Soft-tissue can be defined as any muscle, tendon, ligament, fascia and even fibrosis or scar tissue. Injuries or trauma can be defined with a single event sprained ankle to the repetitive stress injury or overuse injury such as tennis elbow.   “Tere’s almost always a soft-tissue component associated with any injury or condition,” says Travis McCathie, DC, ATC, director of the Northwestern Health Sciences University’s Center for Sports and Rehabilitation. It’s important to note that what gives IASTM the ability to reinitiate first-stage healing is that it is essentially reinjuring the body, although to a lesser degree, which may cause discomfort during the procedure and bruising afterward. “Patients may experience soreness in the treatment area for a day or two following IASTM,” explains Dr. Heller.   Soft-tissue mobili...

London Olympics 2012: Kinesiotape / Kinesiology Tape / Physio Tape Skepticism Answered

DPA - Leryn Franco Reuters - Katrin Holtwick Getty Images - Trey Hardee Kinesiotape, aka kinesiology tape, physio tape or elastic therapeutic tape, is back in the Olympics in 2012. I made a blog article talking about the use of kinesiotape in 2008 with pictures of Kerri Walsh Jennings and Martin Plavins . For this olympics, it is used more than before but it is still not accepted by the skeptics in the scientific community. The critics credit any success to the placebo effect because of the lack of scientific evidence. There are plenty of journal research on professional athletes and superstition. Superstition gives athletes confidence which is proven to provide more "luck" or success. I will talk more about how kinesiotape does have specific therapeutic functions that are easy to understand. "I think, if anything, there is a placebo effect involved, and there probably is a little bit of a peer pressure effect. When people see...

Michael Phelps uses Graston Technique therapy in Olympic training

Michael Phelps on the cover of Aug 2012 Credits: Details Magazine Michael Phelps, the 14 time olympic gold medalist, briefly mentions using Graston Technique instruments as part of his training recovery in his interview with Details magazine by Selene Yeager. DETAILS: So what do you do for recovery? Michael Phelps: My trainer, Keenan [Robinson], uses Graston tools, these little metal crowbars. He carves them into my shoulder blades, my back, my knee, my hamstrings—wherever I'm really tight—to loosen things up. It's pretty intense. Obscenities fly out of my mouth the whole time, and I'm usually bruised for two days after it. Research Validates Benefits & Cost Efficacy of Chiropractic Verses Other Therapies

Image: renjith krishnan / FreeDigitalPhotos.net In June, a peer reviewed medical journal, Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, statistically analyzed and interpreted an older National Health Interview Survey. The study revealed that 60% reported "a great deal" of benefit. Chiropractic had the highest success rate among the 6 most popular CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) with 66% reporting significant benefit followed by massage, yoga and qi gong tied for second place. Connecticut Board of Chiropractic Examiners Finds No Clear Association Between Neck Adjustments & Strokes

Neck Pain Task Force presented before the Connecticut Board of Chiropractic Examiners that "patients suffering from headache and neck pain are no more likely to suffer from a stroke following a visit to a chiropractor than they are after a visit to a family medical physician." The Neck Pain Task Force studied nine years worth of research. The Cennecticut board also concluded that the media "often sensationalized" and perpetuated the myth with chiropractic adjustments. Their conclusions are in agreement with my previous blog entry. ChiroWorks Care Center Anthony Tsai, D.C. Chiropractic Stroke Risk & Connecticut Health Department

Connecticut advocacy groups are trying to force chiropractors warn patients of strokes with every chirorpractic neck adjustment. Strokes after a chiropractic adjustment is probably one of the most common concerns that I find with patients who have never had chiropractic treatment. It is almost like the "dirty" little secret in chiropractic. Chiropractic stroke aka "vertebral artery dissection" (VAD) and "vertebrobasilar arterial ischemia" (VBI) can occur in the beauty salons with "Beauty parlor stroke syndrome," painters, swimming and bow hunting. For a good source of information about chiropractic strokes, you can visit chiro.org's link here or NCMIC's brochure here . It is important to keep in mind some common symptoms associated with strokes in general: 5 D’s And 3 N’s: SIGNS OF STROKE Diplopia -- Double vision or other vision problems Dizziness -- Vertigo, light-headedness Drop attacks -- Sudden numbness/weakness of face/arm/l...

Chiropractic and Children

Diana Williams of WABC-TV of New York, NY and Channel 9: wftv.com of Orlando, Florida reports about a chiropractor that uses the ProAdjuster system . Click here to view the video segment titled "Space Age Back Healing" . Chiropractors claims regarding the benefits for chiropractic and children range from ear infections, cholicky infants, ADHD and scoliosis. While I do not promote non-musculoskeletal conditions with chiropractic, I have heard from collegues with many success stories. In 2007, one study found that chiropractic can help reduce high blood pressure. Therefore, it is important to keep an open mind and watch for more research before jumping to conclusions. Children have the same pains and aches as any adults so I treat children for musculoskeletal disorders like a sprain or strain. It is always best to address a problem early so I would endorse chiropractic for children. It is important to educate children with good habits such as good posture or computer use er...
