Recent Caloric Restriction Study on the Effects on Aging

Left Starved Monkey, Right Normal Diet Monkey National Institute on Aging / NIH A recent study on the effects of "starvation" diet and longevity of life in rhesus monkeys was published last August in Nature . The title given in a NY Times article was "Severe Diet Doesn’t Prolong Life, at Least in Monkeys." I am just a chiropractor so I am by no means an expert. I feel that a good research article needs a dose of common sense. It is easy to get lost and sometimes the numbers can be deceptive without common sense judgements. I bring this article up because I feel that this is the case just like claims that the only benefits to kinesiotape were placebo. I just find this research experiment fascinating also. It all started in July 10, 2009 in an article in Science, "Caloric Restriction Delays Disease Onset and Mortality in Rhesus Monkeys" which sounded like the secret to longevity in humans. Around that time, it was also shown to be the same with mice al...

Usain Bolt / Team Jamaica Uses Chiropractic Care in Olympic Training

Michael L. Douglas, D.C. performing an adjustment on Usain Bolt at the 2011 IAAF World Championships Dr. Michael Douglas DC from Florida was the team chiropractor for Team Jamaica from 1996 through 2008. There is also an article from 2009 about Usain Bolt with Dr. Douglas  and a tweet about attending the London Olympics in 2012. I could not find anymore information about Usain Bolt utilizing chiropractic care and the 2012 Olympics though I believe Dr. Douglas was still the team chiropractor for Jamaica in 2012. The latest information that I could verify were pictures of Usain Bolt getting chiropractic adjustments at the 2011 IAAF World Championships . Other athletes that are reported to use chiropractic care are Asafa Powell, Veronica Campbell and Shelly-Ann Fraser. Chiropractic Neurology is a specialized technique and here is a demonstration of chiropractic neurology . There is also a picture of Dr. Douglas using an Activator instrument and I believe he is using the Activator...

London Olympics 2012: Kinesiotape / Kinesiology Tape / Physio Tape Skepticism Answered

DPA - Leryn Franco Reuters - Katrin Holtwick Getty Images - Trey Hardee Kinesiotape, aka kinesiology tape, physio tape or elastic therapeutic tape, is back in the Olympics in 2012. I made a blog article talking about the use of kinesiotape in 2008 with pictures of Kerri Walsh Jennings and Martin Plavins . For this olympics, it is used more than before but it is still not accepted by the skeptics in the scientific community. The critics credit any success to the placebo effect because of the lack of scientific evidence. There are plenty of journal research on professional athletes and superstition. Superstition gives athletes confidence which is proven to provide more "luck" or success. I will talk more about how kinesiotape does have specific therapeutic functions that are easy to understand. "I think, if anything, there is a placebo effect involved, and there probably is a little bit of a peer pressure effect. When people see...

Michael Phelps uses Graston Technique therapy in Olympic training

Michael Phelps on the cover of Aug 2012 Credits: Details Magazine Michael Phelps, the 14 time olympic gold medalist, briefly mentions using Graston Technique instruments as part of his training recovery in his interview with Details magazine by Selene Yeager. DETAILS: So what do you do for recovery? Michael Phelps: My trainer, Keenan [Robinson], uses Graston tools, these little metal crowbars. He carves them into my shoulder blades, my back, my knee, my hamstrings—wherever I'm really tight—to loosen things up. It's pretty intense. Obscenities fly out of my mouth the whole time, and I'm usually bruised for two days after it. Arnold Schwarzenegger Endorses Chiropractic in March 2011

At a recent Arnold Schwarzenegger Fitness Weekend convention from March 3rd - 6th, 2011 in Columbus, Ohio, the former governor promoted the importance of chiropractic, the close relationship between fitness health and chiropractic and how chiropractic has helped him and his family in the past. In the past, Arnold has been a champion for not only fitness, nutrition and health but also chiropractic which is what this symposium was about. International Chiropractic Association (ICA) was there to represent chiropractic including a small group of select chiropractors. “We’ve got to let the people know that there is a necessity , it’s not even an option, it’s a necessity to have a chiropractor. As much as it is a necessity to have a dentist, if you have a dentist for the family, you should have your chiropractor for the family.” Best quote from Arnold Governor Schwarzenegger commented on developments in health care reform and the need to include prevention. He observed, "If you don...

Migraines & Weight : Girls who get migraines appear more likely than their peers to gain extra weight during adulthood, scientists say. I think many people with chronic pain will gain weight and probably have depression. My guess is that anti-depressants would help also. (sarcasm)  Frederik Joelving Article Shockwave therapy fails in study of 'jumper's knee' : "No Effect of Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy on Patellar Tendinopathy in Jumping Athletes During the Competitive Season". A therapy that uses sound waves to heal injured tissue may not be much help for athletes with "jumper's knee" -- at least when the treatment is used alone, a new study suggests. People with the digestive disorder known as celiac disease are more likely to develop another disorder involving the immune system: asth...

Dr Oz Promotes Chiropractic for Low Back Pain

Dr. Mehmet Oz Credits: Dr Oz website Citing a study that I mentioned in a previous blog entry with 80% successful back pain reduction with chiropractic, Dr Oz has Dr Steven Shoshany DC demonstrate chiropractic. Dr Oz first shows how misalignment can throw off the whole spine. Then he has a giant vertebrae model and a disc herniation pinching a spinal nerve. The whole segment was very quick and I have yet to find a video of it on the internet. Unfortunately, they don't have the segment on Dr Oz's website either. DrOzFans.com has a very good summary of the chiropractic segment also . I am not a big fan of pushing the pinched nerve idea on patients a lot when there is no disc herniation or arthritic stenosis. My only other concern was that he made no assessment of the patient's restrictions or the area of pain. Dr. Shoshany basically adjusted both sides of the pelvis the same way and made a final adjustment of a random area in the thoracic spine. He has over 200 reviews ...
